Professor in the Sociology of Sport in the Department of Human and Social Sciences

Bettina is a Professor for Diversity Studies in the Institute of Sociology at the German Sport University Cologne. She has a diploma and a PhD in sport sciences and her main areas of research are gender and diversity studies, social inequality, child protection and prevention of sexual violence in sport.
Since 2010, she has been a member of the National Working Group on Child Protection in Sport in Germany and as a member of that group, the German Sport Youth, entrusted her with the compilation of guidelines for child protection in sport.
She was co-lead of the EU-funded project ‘CASES’ (Child Abuse in Sport – European Statistics), which aimed at delivering a scientific study into the prevalence of child maltreatment and abuse in sport in six EU countries. From 2016-2018, she led the EU-funded project ‘VOICE’, which focused on the reports of those who have been affected by sexual violence in sport. From 2014-2017, she led the research project ‘Safe Sport’ in Germany, which was funded by the German Ministry of Science and Education and focused on child protection and the prevention of sexual violence in organised sport.
