How Does it Work?

Project X CODE is a highly motivational series of 3D adventure books, based on a structured progression of phonics, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Teaching and Assessment Handbooks with detailed session notes support a trained teaching assistant or teacher to teach a small group of children for half an hour four times a week. The series of books is available from OUP.

Sessions developed by Edge Hill University to enhance the Project X CODE reading books help children to overcome difficulties, develop their skills and enjoy reading.

Impact on Achievement

Over 8,000 pupils in Years 1 to 8 have been supported by trained teaching assistants with Project X CODE in 500 schools.

  • They made an average Reading Age gain of 12 months after 5 months of support by trained teaching assistants – almost 70% more than the gain achieved without training.
  • Their comprehension scores rose by 70% – over twice the gain achieved without training.
  • 96% of them showed more interest and confidence in reading after Project X CODE.


Training by an accredited ECC Trainer enables teaching assistants to adapt sessions to meet children’s needs and develops their reading subject knowledge and pedagogy, not just for Project X CODE but for all their work in school. They can move on to further accredited academic study.

Training for teachers enables them to support, manage and evaluate Project X CODE and embed it in an overall strategy to tackle underachievement in reading.

We offer two training packages to suit your school’s needs:

Option 1 – group training at a local venue

  • 6 half days over 2 terms for your teaching assistant
  • 2 half days for a Link Teacher from your school

Option 2 – in-school training for TAs and Teachers

  • 2 days, one or two months apart
  • tailored to meet the school’s needs

Each local provider determines their own charges to schools depending on local circumstances. The charge for 2018/19 for a new Project X CODE teaching assistant, with their Link Teacher, attending group training will be in the region of £770.

An in-school course of two days for your teaching assistants and teachers, tailored to your needs, would be in the region of £2,200
