Every Child Counts has 4 ‘families’ of literacy intervention programmes, each meeting the needs of targeted groups of pupils. All programmes come with extensive, attractive ready–to–use resources, written guidance manuals and the highest quality face-to-face training.

Teachers and teaching assistants can start teaching straight after their first training day and then the training runs parallel with their teaching in their training term.

Readers Count A teacher-led, personalised programme for pupils who really struggle with reading. Covers phonic knowledge and skills, text comprehension and vocabulary development.

1stClass@Writing Teaching assistant-led programmes for groups of up to 4 pupils who need support to become confident and independent writers.

Training and Support for Project X CODE Training for Teachers and TAs to use the Project X CODE adventure books. A structured progression of phonics, vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Better Reading Support Partners Train a TA or volunteer to become a Better Reading Support Partner. Provides a 10-week programme of three 15-minute one-to-one sessions per week for pupils who have fallen behind at reading.

Why are they needed?

27% of pupils in English primary schools did not achieve the expected standard in either reading or writing at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2 in 2017.  That’s an average of 10 pupils in every year group in every school who have fallen behind and could be helped by an Every Child Counts programme.

The Education Endowment Foundation’s Improving Literacy in Key Stage One and Two reports both recommend that schools should ‘use high-quality structured interventions to help pupils who are struggling with their literacy’.  ECC interventions meet all of the reports’ criteria for an effective intervention.
