As such, climate communication is a constitutive dimension of climate action, shaping cultural understandings and societal responses to climate change (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcomm.2021.711897\/full\">Carvalho, Russill &amp; Doyle<\/a> 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/404\/2024\/02\/SystemChangeHive_Project.jpg\" alt=\"System Change Hive Project, green background with hexagon images floating across the image. A man under an umbrella and a man holding a stereo.\" class=\"wp-image-13669\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/404\/2024\/02\/futurecoastyouth_Project-573x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Future Coast Youth Project, students in the window of a shop all holding up garden tools.\" class=\"wp-image-13673\" style=\"width:364px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing upon my experiences of working on a number of creative climate communication projects with young people in the UK and Europe (<a href=\"https:\/\/ijoc.org\/index.php\/ijoc\/article\/viewFile\/14003\/3093\">Doyle 2020<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/climates.boku.ac.at\/en\/infos\/\">Cli-Mates<\/a> 2017; <a href=\"https:\/\/swarmdynamics.org\/live-swarm-effects-system-change-hive\/\">System Change Hive<\/a> 2019), in this talk I will explore how collaborative and participatory approaches to climate communication can help facilitate multidimensional and interdisciplinary modes of climate learning and engagement. In foregrounding playfulness, co-creation, emotional sharing and interdisciplinarity, collaborative approaches can facilitate (young) people\u2019s socio-cultural understandings of climate change and increase self and group efficacy. Discussing these findings, the talk will also reflect upon the challenges of time\/space specific learning experiences and collaborative projects for researchers and participants. Despite these challenges, I argue for the need to work together across disciplines and practices, and in careful collaboration with communities, to foster new climate stories and engagements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.brighton.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/julie-doyle\">Julie Doyle<\/a> is a Professor of Media and Communication in the School of Art and Media at the University of Brighton, UK. Julie\u2019s research explores the role of visual media and popular culture in shaping societal understandings of, and responses to, climate change. Julie also works collaboratively with artists and cultural educators on co-created climate communications projects that seek to facilitate transformational climate learning experiences. She has provided consultancy for environmental NGOs, government and the sustainability communications sector on best practice for climate and environmental communication.
