{"id":12420,"date":"2025-08-07T09:08:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T09:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/mentorspace\/?page_id=12420"},"modified":"2026-05-13T08:13:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T08:13:59","slug":"dfe-funding-for-schools","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/mentorspace\/dfe-funding-for-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Department for Education (DfE) General Mentor Training Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/mentorspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2025\/10\/Initial_teacher_training_ITT_delivery_funding_guidance_2025_to_2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DfE delivery funding guidance<\/a> for schools gives school partners the information they will require for understanding the funding conditions and how to claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">While there is no longer a minimum training time requirement for mentor training, requirements relating to the quality,\u202fcontent and coverage of mentor training have not changed, and mentors will still need to have the same knowledge, skills and abilities as previously detailed in the ITT Criteria and Supporting Advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">At Edgehill we have listened to mentor feedback and continue to work with mentors to support development and to make this available in one space online in Abyasa. An outline of our mentor development for 2025-26 is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/mentorspace\/mentor-development\/\">available here<\/a>&nbsp;with important links for mentors to book onto training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The DFE funding is designed to support mentors working in schools that offer initial teacher training (ITT) placements&nbsp; to complete sufficient training with an accredited training provider to ensure they can effectively support a trainee teacher to obtain the knowledge and skills they need to successfully complete their ITT school placement; funding will help with the cost of mentors being away from the classroom while they train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>This could include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6\" style=\"font-size:18px\">paying for someone to take over lessons while a mentor is training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7\" style=\"font-size:18px\">paying for someone to teach if a mentor takes time off in lieu to train<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8\" style=\"font-size:18px\">overtime payment to the mentor, if they are training outside normal working hours (teacher workload should be carefully considered in such cases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9\" style=\"font-size:18px\">paying for any costs that come from reducing a mentor\u2019s other responsibilities so they have time to train<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10\">Eligibility for funding<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-11\">DfE funding applies to schools that:<br><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-12\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Offer placements to student teachers, including special schools, pupil referral units, independent schools, early years settings and further education organisations;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Have mentors working with ITT trainees who started or returned to their first year of training at any time between 1 September 2025 and 31 May 2026 (PGCE 25-26 and Undergraduates Year 1);<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-14\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Have mentors that intended to work with ITT trainees who would have started their training any time between 1 September 2025 and 31 May 2026, the trainee withdrew after the mentor training took place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-15 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#5f2a60;font-size:18px\"><strong>For a school to claim DfE funding, the mentor must:<\/strong><br><br>Undertake up to 16 hours of mentor training for new mentors or 6 hours of refresher training for returning mentors<br><em>and<\/em><br>Mentor at least one trainee in the academic year.<br><br><em>A school cannot claim funding if a member of staff at their school completes our training but does not mentor a trainee.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-16\">How to apply<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-17 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">Placement schools will be able to submit a claim via the GOV.UK service. The service will open in Spring 2026 and schools will be able to submit their claims once their mentors have completed their training. Schools must complete their claims by the end of July to receive payment in late September\/early October. If schools miss the payment window, they will be able to submit a claim in September, with payment being made in December 2026\/January 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-18\">Timeline for payments<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-19 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The ITT reform delivery grants available within the 2025\/26 academic year will be paid in arrears.
