Animals also materially shape and remake landscapes through their individual and everyday species-specific practices, acknowledgement of which recognises their agency in the production of spaces. At the same time, the relationship between the symbolic and the material can reveal much about the colonisation of spaces, and the anthropocentric exploitation of landscapes and the animals who inhabit them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This event invites participants to consider the complex relationships between animals and landscapes, where \u2018landscapes\u2019 is understood in a broad, inclusive manner. It is particularly interested in exploring how animals shape landscapes in both material and symbolic senses, and how multispecies approaches can be used to critically reconsider landscape aesthetics, animal agency, and spaces of co-production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We welcome papers, poster presentations, and creative responses from scholars across arts, humanities and social science disciplines that address the broad theme of animal landscapes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indicative topics include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Animal landscapes in art, media, film, radio, literature&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presence and\/or absence in extinction and\/or climate change discourses and narratives&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Movement in, across and\/or through landscape&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Animal agency and landscape use&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Farmed landscapes and\/or the animal industrial complex&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Idealised landscapes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landscapes\/soundscapes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Deadline for submissions: 16 October 2022&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This event is funded by UKRI AHRC as part of the Multispecies Storytelling project and organised by members of the Centre for Human Animal Studies (CfHAS) at Edge Hill University. The term \u2018multispecies\u2019 is used to\ncharacterise a varied set of critical perspectives that are connected in their\ncommitment to non-anthropocentric ways of thinking. Multispecies studies\nconsider communities of living beings, their shared histories and\ninterrelationships in ways that bring \u2018diverse bodies of knowledge into\nconversation \u2026 pushing them in new directions\u2019 (Van Dooren et al, 2016: 2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the imperatives of multispecies\napproaches is to interrogate and challenge anthropocentric approaches and\nemphasise interrelationships with other forms of life. In multispecies\nresearch, participants extend the understanding of value to include the\nperspectives of the more-than-human world. As an important shift away from the\ntraditions that normalise human-centred thinking about \u2018nature\u2019 and \u2018the\nnatural world\u2019, multispecies approaches can help to identify alternative ways of\nresponding to questions about place, interspecies ethics, and land use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This conference, organised by the\nMultispecies Storytelling network, asks how multispecies approaches can be used\nto understand more-than-human heritage and explore the epistemological,\nmethodological and policy implications of such thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We invite proposals from various\ndisciplines including media studies, communication studies, cultural studies,\ngeography, history, philosophy, literature, sociology, art, and anthropology.\nAs well as \u2018traditional\u2019 papers, we welcome creative works that engage with the\nconference themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">15-minute papers are invited on topics\nincluding but not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Imagining multispecies heritage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multispecies heritage and landscape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multispecies heritage and place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethics and multispecies heritage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More-than-human landscapes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Land use and more-than-human perspectives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multispecies methodologies and epistemologies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This event will take place online and will\nbe free to attend.
