Matthew Pateman – Head of Edge Hill University’s English and Creative Arts Department

“Pateman Plays is a music show that will have you hugging your childhood and scratching your head: from much-loved classics to the weird and wonderful!”

Matthew Pateman

Exclusively airing on Edge Hill University’s recently launched student-run radio station, ‘Edgehog Radio, Pateman Plays is a music show that plays a variety of old, yet nostalgic and well-loved classic tunes, as well as alternative and eccentric tracks.

Airing weekly on Tuesdays between 2 and 4pm (and repeating every Thursday at the same time), Pateman Plays is hosted by Head of Edge Hill University’s English and Creative Arts Department – Matthew Pateman. His specialist area focuses on the coming-of-age drama, action and fantasy television programme, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and the show’s creator, Joss Whedon.

The format of Pateman Plays resembles that of Marc Riley on BBC Radio 6, by compiling a unique and eclectic mix of iconic and evocative, but also alternative and indie, music for its listeners. In between the diverse tracks, is a short conversation with a member of the Edge Hill community, whether staff or student. For instance, week one’s guest was Julie Climpson, who works in the administration office in the Creative Edge building – home to all of the creative courses at Edge Hill. Shortly after this segment, three songs chosen by the EHU interviewee are played on the show. Another fun weekly segment is The Departmental Theme, whereby Matthew introduces the chosen University department of the week (e.g. geography, religious studies, accounting and finance, etc.) and plays songs that fit in with the subject area! Finally, Pateman’s Preferred LPs is another repeat segment, which features Matthew’s favourite long-playing vinyl records.

Not able to make it onto the show but still want to request songs? No problem! Listeners can request songs, and even who they’d like to hear being interviewed for the show, as well as send ideas in, by emailing Matthew Pateman via – [email protected]

Just make sure your chosen track fits into the specially grouped themes on the show, there are always three or four songs played consecutively that fit into the same sort of genre – usually, this is rock or alternative/indie songs.

Make sure to tune into this eclectic, fun, informative, communal and chatty radio show – you won’t want to miss it!
