Bront\u00eb Crawford<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Beware the boggarts on the marsh.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018There was a young girl jus\u2019 las\u2019 week, why \u2013<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n About thy age.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Snatched off \u2018er feet as she wor on \u2018er way.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n They found bits of \u2018er skin in the thorn bushes.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Still Annie took the same path to the university across the marshes, between the bare hedgerows like the blackened bones of the damned, the trees that sprouted crows\u2019 nests like witches\u2019 warts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She could well believe that even the land and its fey offspring would conspire to keep a woman from her books. She found it harder to believe that God was watching over her as she walked there, with the cold gnawing at her hands even with a hot butter pie clutched between her fingers, her feet sinking into the bog, her path forward wreathed in mist that rose up from the bog. And the berries hanging from the bushes, like drops of that poor girl\u2019s blood frozen where they fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But faith is measured in the flesh, Annie knew, not in fine words and fairy tales. And so she went on, wishing for her grandmother\u2019s hearth fire if not the stories told around it, for the ringing of church bells to drown out the echo of old wives\u2019 tales in her ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If the boggarts did see her, books strapped to her back, bent at the waist against the cold, perhaps they took her for a witch, spellbooks and all. Looking out for their bones to crush into her cauldron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n II<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018Beware the ksuids in the forest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2018There were two young girls last month, why \u2013<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n You might\u2019ve taught them.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Tickled to death by U Ksuid Tynjang.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n They found strands of their hair in the trees.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Still Annie took the same path to the school through the forest, between the white heads of mushrooms like the crowns of skulls, beneath the blue rudraksha <\/em>fruits like watching eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She would not have it that the land and its ghastly offspring should keep her students from hearing their lesson, from listening to the word of God instead of the fables told by their foremothers. Fables that haunted her too as she walked there, with the air itself too hot to breathe, her dress as damp as the soil and her path fringed by cobra lilies that swayed without a breeze. And the strings of moss hanging from the trees, like strands of those poor girls\u2019 hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But faith is measured in the footprints one leaves behind, Annie knew, not in fearful visions and feeble lungs. And so she went on, the taste of kwai <\/em>fading on her tongue, through this forest of which neither the Good Book or even her grandmother could have told, with only wise women\u2019s tales to light her way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If the ksuids <\/em>did see her, with her student\u2019s workbooks in hand, bent at the waist with coughing, perhaps they took for a ghost, for her lips were blue enough. Hunting for other lost souls to guide on their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ships<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Our final night, and I am up until the early hours,<\/p>\n\n\n\n listening to the wireless and copying the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My father had it on the wall, and I found it again<\/p>\n\n\n\n in a book from the library, after a week of searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I hope it isn\u2019t too much, too formal and sombre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You will mock me up a quick skit of a cat or fox,<\/p>\n\n\n\n or us whacking each other with hockey sticks,<\/p>\n\n\n\n or laughing like chickens over our hot chocolate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The day I tumbled from my bicycle somewhere<\/p>\n\n\n\n in the wilds of Ormskirk, the world flipped upside down<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2013 I was clinging to a grassy ceiling, terrified to fall<\/p>\n\n\n\n into the blue below, and you thought I was joking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then you took my wrist, and the world tipped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With brush, paint and water, I ease in ripples of ocean,<\/p>\n\n\n\n smudges of ship, leaving no tear or wrinkle in any sail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I want you to have a safe voyage, wherever you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I may never see you again, when I head further North;<\/p>\n\n\n\n you, South. You were never good at holiday letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Remember our vocab cards? Pictures from magazines,<\/p>\n\n\n\n mine neater. We each did two of each, then shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have half of yours \u2013 frogs, plums \u2013 and you have half<\/p>\n\n\n\n of mine \u2013 moon, snow. Our pupils will chant them<\/p>\n\n\n\n like a song. When we are old \u2013 you maybe keeping bees,<\/p>\n\n\n\n me baking for my village \u2013 I\u2019ll whisper your name,<\/p>\n\n\n\n and there you will be, sails billowing. This is what<\/p>\n\n\n\n I am hoping for, with my ship, careful and loving,<\/p>\n\n\n\n in your friendship book, which I will return to you<\/p>\n\n\n\n tomorrow, our last day.
