Shaping Futures
Shaping Futures and the role of place in widening access and student success in Knowsley.
Knowsley, a borough within the Liverpool City Region, stands out even among high levels of regional deprivation, ranking as one of the most disadvantaged areas in the UK. Despite spanning over 11 miles, it is less than 2 miles wide, comprising scattered post-war ex-industrial zones, residential areas, and countryside. This fragmented geography contributes to a lack of social cohesion between its wards. Knowsley includes two towns, Prescot and Whiston, and four former council estates: Huyton, Kirkby, Halewood, and Stockbridge Village.
The borough faces long-standing educational challenges and has consistently been ranked among the lowest in the country for academic outcomes. Uniquely, none of Knowsley’s sixth forms currently offer A-Level qualifications, limiting post-16 progression routes for young people. These issues are compounded by deep-rooted socio-economic factors, including child poverty, low aspirations, and limited access to further and higher education.
Shaping Futures, a Uni Connect partnership initiative, has played a central role in supporting learners in Knowsley since 2017. Working in collaboration with all secondary schools in the borough, the programme has reached over 6,000 students with interventions such as one-to-one guidance, campus visits, and subject-specific projects. These efforts aim to raise aspirations and equip young people with the tools needed to access education, apprenticeships, or employment.
This presentation will explore the complex educational landscape in Knowsley, highlight successful interventions and partnerships, and offer recommendations for future actions to better support local students in overcoming barriers and achieving their full potential.
