Enhancing Student’s Confidence and Competence in Supporting the Home Learning Environment – Making it REAL
Edge Hill University and the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) have worked together to provide an opportunity for their Early years Education students to become trained in delivering an evidence based early literacy programme for the first time ever in the UK.
Making it REAL (Raising Early Achievement in Literacy) is a renowned programme that gives educators the ability to support parents and guardians using a specific framework to help their children with early reading and writing at home.
It forms part of the government’s wider social mobility plan based on studies of pre-school education that found that the home learning environment made a significant difference in children’s learning.
Nearly 100 students have now been trained as part of this unique collaboration to offer the evidence-based programme to our undergraduate students and we look at the impact that this has had for them in supporting families with early literacy within the home learning environment.
