SustainNET puts civic engagement at the heart of sustainable development, bringing staff, students and communities together to act on the environmental, economic and social challenges that matter most, right here<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Public centred<\/strong>:&nbsp;Local people and partners help set our priorities and shape our decisions, not just receive the outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Locally orientated<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; We mobilise our research, teaching, student energy around needs identified with, not for, Lancashire communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategically focused<\/strong>: We deliver civic activity that is joined up across the university, supporting students, staff and partners to benefit, through both in-curricular and extracurricular experiences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-context=\"{ &quot;autoclose&quot;: false, &quot;accordionItems&quot;: [] }\" data-wp-interactive=\"core\/accordion\" role=\"group\" class=\"wp-block-accordion is-layout-flow wp-block-accordion-is-layout-flow\">\n<div data-wp-class--is-open=\"state.isOpen\" data-wp-context=\"{ &quot;id&quot;: &quot;accordion-item-1&quot;, &quot;openByDefault&quot;: false }\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.initAccordionItems\" data-wp-on-window--hashchange=\"callbacks.hashChange\" class=\"wp-block-accordion-item is-layout-flow wp-block-accordion-item-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-accordion-heading has-icon has-icon-right\"><button aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion-item-1-panel\" data-wp-bind--aria-expanded=\"state.isOpen\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.toggle\" id=\"accordion-item-1\" type=\"button\" class=\"wp-block-accordion-heading__toggle\"><span class=\"wp-block-accordion-heading__toggle-title\">Facilitating community engagement opportunities<\/span><span class=\"wp-block-accordion-heading__toggle-icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\">+<\/span><\/button><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div aria-labelledby=\"accordion-item-1\" data-wp-bind--hidden=\"state.isHidden\" data-wp-on--beforematch=\"actions.handleBeforeMatch\" id=\"accordion-item-1-panel\" role=\"region\" class=\"wp-block-accordion-panel is-layout-flow wp-block-accordion-panel-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For community groups or SustainNET <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/partners\/\">partners<\/a> seeking support to tackle a social, economic or environmentally sustainable challenge, SustaiNET offers an opportunity to connect with staff and students in the following ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Research<\/strong>: connect with academic and student <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/?page_id=14511\">researchers<\/a> to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Generating knowledge<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 find the answer to questions that are important to you. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This can include&nbsp;<strong>reviewing existing evidence<\/strong>&nbsp;to provide an analysis of what is already known about a topic e.g. what are the most effective behaviour change strategies for engaging communities in climate action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> It can also include collecting <strong>new information <\/strong>from the local community through surveys, interviews or other creative methods e.g. walking interviews to identify barriers to accessing green spaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evaluate your service<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 measure how well your activities, programmes or initiatives work for local people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Volunteer or placement opportunities<\/strong>: find a student with the skills and attributes to support your activities, programmes or initiatives and support students to develop leadership skills and other key graduate attributes. Promote a vacancy for students through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/departments\/support\/celt\/careers\/information-for-employers\/\">Employment Engagement Team<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Successful student engagement in civic activities within the community requires clarity and consideration of the demands of modern student life. As a widening participation university, this means low-barrier entry points, recognition of the skills students build (teamwork, confidence, employability), and a deliberate effort to reach first-generation students, commuter students and those balancing work and study. As such, civic engagement is a route into opportunity, not another obstacle. When proposing a civic activity to students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frame the opportunity around the real difference it makes locally, so students see the change they&#8217;re part of.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give clear, accessible information up front about what&#8217;s involved, the time commitment, and what students will gain. This allows students to make an informed choice to take part.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer genuine leadership roles, so that student enhance their employability. This can include co-designing projects, training peers, leading teams and building partnerships with local organisations, not just attending or delivering a project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide the right support for each person, including an induction, training and regular check-ins, recognising that students thrive at different levels of responsibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>News and events<\/strong>: keep informed about civic engagement <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/latest-news\/\">news and events<\/a>. Find out how to apply&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainability\/student-sustainability-initiative-fund\/\">here<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shaping curriculum<\/strong> <strong>development<\/strong>: Students can take advantage of opportunities to shape how sustainability features in the curriculum in two core ways. Firstly, identifying opportunities to embed sustainability into course modules through a curriculum audit. This includes mapping module content and assessments against United Nations Sustainable Development&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainability\/education-for-sustainable-development\/\">Goals<\/a>&nbsp;or Planetary Health Report Card&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phreportcard.org\/\">metrics<\/a>. Secondly, connecting with community groups and SustainNET partners to identify dissertation research questions or projects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong>: beyond the curriculum, students can engage in staff led projects through <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=14544&amp;action=edit\">research internships&nbsp;<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Volunteering and placements<\/strong>: Students can apply to volunteer or complete a sustainability placement at Edge Hill University. As an example, student volunteers have hosted awareness activities at the Sustainability Fair held annually, in November.
