Using active pedagogies learners are supported in addressing complex or \u2018wicked problems\u2019 and identifying how they can contribute to solutions that address environmental integrity, social justice and economic prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The QAA, in partnership with Advance HE, have a range of useful resources to help academic staff incorporate ESD within their curricula:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.membershipresources.qaa.ac.uk\/teaching-learning-and-assessment\/education-for-sustainable-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">https:\/\/www.membershipresources.qaa.ac.uk\/teaching-learning-and-assessment\/education-for-sustainable-development<\/span><\/a> &gt;&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All staff and students at EHU can register to use this site: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.membershipresources.qaa.ac.uk\/Login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">https:\/\/www.membershipresources.qaa.ac.uk\/Login<\/span><\/a> &gt;&gt;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guidance gives advice and support on curriculum design, as well as teaching, learning and assessment approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside the guidance you can access a range of complementary materials including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a short video which answers the question \u201cWhat is ESD?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a suite of inspiring practice guides which provide practical examples of how diverse UK institutions have successfully incorporated ESD within their curricula.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a resource to support students to actively engage with their institution and students&#8217; union about ESD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An excellent example of how to integrate sustainability into the curriculum is provided by Anna Moore &#8220;A planetary health curriculum for medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/375\/bmj.n2385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/375\/bmj.n2385<\/span><\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read Professor John Sandars latest post: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.edgehill.ac.uk\/isr\/a-new-years-resolution-education-for-the-un-sustainable-development-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"stk-highlight\">A New Year\u2019s Resolution: Education for the UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can we practically put Education for Sustainable Development into action?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Education for Sustainable Development Guidance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jointly published by QAA and Advance HE, this guidance provides a framework&nbsp;and&nbsp;guidance to help staff in UK higher education institutions&nbsp; incorporate Education for Sustainable Development&nbsp;within their curricula. It&nbsp;has been produced by an expert group drawn from across the sector, with the aim of supporting students from any discipline to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to develop values and take actions to transition society towards sustainable futures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advance HE Members can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.advance-he.ac.uk\/knowledge-hub\/education-sustainable-development-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">download the full guidance<\/span><\/a> ( EHU staff are members)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000247444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/280\/2021\/03\/Education-for-SDGs-UNESCO-cover-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/280\/2021\/03\/Education-for-SDGs-UNESCO-cover-2017.jpg 295w, https:\/\/sites.edgehill.ac.uk\/sustainnet\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/280\/2021\/03\/Education-for-SDGs-UNESCO-cover-2017-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>UNESCO provides a useful list of learning objectives for each of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/sustainabledevelopmentgoals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">17 Sustainability Development Goals (SDG)<\/span><\/a> and discusses how these can be achieved. UNESCO moving forward the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/creativity\/sites\/creativity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/280\/247785en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0693e3;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/span><\/a> is also available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Higher Education Academy (HEA) offers &nbsp;general and practical advice about teaching and &nbsp;learning, assessment and the learning environment. There is a useful checklist for all educators:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions that educators may ask themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reflecting on Sustainability\/Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How does education for sustainable development relate to my subject area or discipline?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To what extent am I already covering sustainable development issues? &nbsp;How can I make those features more explicit?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What types of sustainable development case studies exist within, and are applicable to, my discipline?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Engaging Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How can I help students develop interdisciplinary thinking and encourage them to take a holistic approach?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If many of my students perceive sustainable development as solely or primarily an environmental issue, how can I ensure they understand the balance between society, economy and environment?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The words \u2018sustainability\u2019 and \u2018sustainable development\u2019 do not resonate with the vocabulary commonly used in my discipline.
