This research study has been conducted in two phases to inform the development of and exploration of the acceptability and impact of Xploro® on children and their parents attending hospital for a planned procedure. Xploro® is an application developed by Corporation Pop that uses augmented reality, gameplay and artificial intelligence to deliver health information to children.

The study was led by Professor Lucy Bray from Edge Hill University and data collection occurred at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

This study has identified the information needs of children coming to hospital for planned procedures. The study has demonstrated that Xploro® improves children and parent’s knowledge and satisfaction of a planned procedure and reduces children and parent’s procedural anxiety. Further research is needed to examine the effectiveness of the app with a larger group of children across multiple sites.
