NCCR On the Move – Neuchatel Graduate Conference of Migration and Mobility Studies

Niroshan Ramachandran participated in the NCCR On the Move – Neuchatel Graduate Conference of Migration and Mobility Studies on 13 and 14 September 2018 in Neuchatel, Switzerland. The NCCR – On the Move is the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) for migration and mobility studies managed by the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland. This conference provided an opportunity for young scholars from different universities and institutions to exchange their knowledge and experience in migration studies.

In this conference, Niroshan presented the preliminary findings from the fieldwork carried out in Glasgow, Scotland as part of his PhD study. The primary focus of this presentation was given to the experiences of asylum seekers and refugees. In principle, he emphasised that regardless of their status both asylum seekers and refugee have different experiences in access to formal social protection services in Glasgow. Furthermore, the presentation added positive notes to the body of knowledge of asylum seekers and refugees’ understanding of their rights, entitlements and mainstream support system. As per the preliminary findings, asylum seekers and refugees were aware of and have a good understanding of the support system and, had access to relevant information about available services. Significantly, findings suggested that asylum seekers and refugees receive positive support in Glasgow, though their access is hindered by several factors.
