The Racial Justice and Migration Research Group brings together researchers, students, and partners committed to advancing understanding of racism, racial justice, migration, and human mobility. Formed through the merger of the Racism Research Group and the Migration Working Group – North West, the group builds on two strong academic traditions to create a collaborative and interdisciplinary platform for critical research and dialogue.

We work across three closely related areas of focus:

  • Racism and racial justice – examining how race and racism shape social structures, institutions, and everyday life, and exploring efforts to promote equality, recognition, and systemic change.
  • Migration and mobility – investigating the patterns, experiences, and governance of human movement across and within borders, and how migrants and communities navigate belonging and identity.
  • Intersections of race and migration – analysing how racialisation and mobility intersect to shape experiences of exclusion, citizenship, and belonging, and how global and local contexts produce new forms of inequality and connection.

By bringing together these perspectives, the group fosters innovative and collaborative research that deepens understanding of inequality, belonging, and justice. Drawing on expertise across disciplines, including history, sociology, politics, and geography, the group supports mentoring, partnerships, and public engagement. We aim to produce scholarship that challenges structural inequalities, informs policy and public debate, and contributes to more equitable and humane understandings of mobility, race, and justice.

Our Mission

The Racial Justice and Migration Research Group seeks to advance rigorous, interdisciplinary research that deepens understanding of how race, racism, and mobility shape societies. Our mission is to foster collaboration across disciplines and sectors, support emerging researchers, and generate knowledge that challenges inequality and promotes inclusion. Through critical scholarship, public engagement, and partnerships, we aim to contribute to fairer, more just, and humane approaches to diversity, movement, and belonging locally and globally.

The Racial Justice and Migration Research Group welcomes researchers, students, practitioners and policymakers interested in issues of racism, racial justice, migration, and mobility. Whether you work directly in these areas or come from related fields, there are opportunities to participate in our seminars, collaborative projects, and network events.
