Curious about sustainability and want to know more… and at the same time enter fun competitions on the subject and win prizes?
Then the Sustainability Festival has tantalising options for you and your friends! Over the 5 days of the festival we are running a range of competitions designed to get you learning more about sustainability and thinking about how you can get involved and make a difference.
Competitions will be running throughout the week and the details of each Competition activity, their times, location and people involved are provided under each day theme below along with information on what you need to do to enter.
PRIZES: We have a great selection of prizes on offer including a range of vouchers for local cafes and businesses, sustainable pen sets and water bottles, a speaker set, and a power bank. We will be continuing to add to this page in the run up to the festival so please keep coming back for the latest updates.

Sustainable Activity Competition

Get involved with sustainable week by completing as many activities from our Sustainable Activity Checklist [pdf] and be in with the chance of winning a prize! To enter all you need to do is take a photo of any of the activities you complete from the checklist (you can submit multiple photos, but only one activity should be shown in each photo). Then all you need to do is upload the pictures to Instagram with the hashtag #SUSTAINABLEEHU and follow @campuslifeehu and @sustainableehu on Instagram. The competition opens from Monday 1st November and closes on Wednesday 3rd November at 00:00 (GMT). The more activities you take part in and submit entries for the better the chance of winning! Wildlife Ushers

The Edge Hill Careers team are looking for an environmentally minded individual to become the campuses first-ever Wildlife Usher. Your job will be to follow the wildlife on campus and ensure their undisturbed travels. You will need to be adaptable and able to work in all weathers. One day you could be helping a hedgehog cross the Boulevard, the next you may be dissuading a goose eating a leftover Subway.
Applications are open during the Sustainability Festival, from Monday 1st until Friday 5th November. Apply in 280 characters or less by tweeting @ehucareers, replying to the post pinned on their Twitter, emailing [email protected] or at their stall in the Hub Thursday 4th November.
(This is a joke position and just for the fun of the Festival – but Careers will gift a £10 Protect the Planet gift voucher to their favourite!)

Litter Pick Challenge

We’ve got a not-so-rubbish challenge for you to get involved with! Join the Groundskeeping team & the community to reduce & recycle litter during the micro session. We’re asking teams of 2 (we can pair you up on the day) to find as much litter scattered around as possible within the Micro Litter Pick . In the spirit of sustainability we want to encourage others to get involved & help each other find litter to recycle. The team of 2 that collects the most bags of litter on the day will be eligible to win a prize!

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Footprint Calculator Challenge

Do you want to know how big your environmental footprint is? Take this questionnaire from WWF and see how your carbon footprint compares to the UK and world average, then challenge yourself to improve your score!

Pizza Competition

Don’t know what to do with those leftovers or half used jars at the back of your fridge? Tired of throwing food away? We are challenging you to get creative and reduce your food waste by entering our leftover pizza competition and be in with a chance of winning a prize! We will provide you with a pack which includes a pizza base, sauce, and cheese. Your task is then to create something exciting using leftover ingredients in your fridge and cupboards. Be as creative as you like but you must use leftovers and it must be edible! Then upload a picture of your creation with the tag @foodatedgehill to either Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to be in with the chance of winning a prize. Entries will be judged, and the winners announced on Friday 5th November. Recycling can be confusing, what is recyclable, what isn’t and why. Join in with our onsite challenge to see how much you already know and learn so much more. There’ll will be a chance to put your knowledge to the test and perhaps win a prize in return.
Friday 5th November
As we reach the end of the Sustainability Festival, put all that new knowledge to work. Why not form a team with your friends or other enthusiasts and join Ormskirk Friends of the Earth for the Environmental Pub Quiz in the Students’ Union Bar at 7.30? Meet some local activists at this fun and friendly event with prizes for the winners. Hope you can make it – we’ll be delighted see you!
