SustainNET is Edge Hill University’s network dedicated to fostering a sustainable future, both on campus and throughout our region. Founded in February 2020, we bring together passionate individuals who seek to advance the sustainability agenda, both on campus and in our region on four interconnected fronts:
- Research: Conducting impactful sustainability research across disciplines.
- Education: Integrating education for sustainable development (ESD) into the curriculum and lifelong learning.
- Student Engagement: Empowering students to become sustainability leaders.
- Civic Engagement: Collaborating with regional stakeholders for a sustainable future.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers people with the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and behaviours to live in a way that is good for the environment, economy, and society. It encourages people to make smart, responsible choices that help create a better future for everyone (UNESCO). SustainNET drives ESD through support and guidance for curriculum development.
Universities have a civic role, within their communities, to deliver local economic growth, develop skills, create vibrant places and serve local community needs (Universities UK). Student and communities are the cornerstone of civic engagement and SustainNET provides a platform for civic activities.
